OUSD Professional Development for visual arts teachers!

Visual Art Teachers Network professional development sessions are generally held the second Wednesday of each month from 2:30-4pm (September – May).   At each meeting we strive to have a theme with a presenter/host (please volunteer), an interactive exercise that can be applied to teaching, and an opportunity for teacher exchange.

From the Field:  Events/Opportunities  

  • Ocean Awareness Student Contest – Middle & High School Students Worldwide; Can submit as student or a group.  Financial award for student, school group and teachers.
  • An Artistic Discovery 2017!   Invitation from Barbara Lee – High school students are invited to participate in An Artistic Discovery 2017! This nationwide competition.  The work of each district’s winning artist is displayed in the U.S. Capitol for one year, reflecting the great diversity of our nation’s high school students. A packet of information has been mailed to schools and should be arriving soon. The details for An Artistic Discovery 2017 are as follows:  Submission Details:   Students must live in the 13″ Congressional District of California and may only submit one piece of original artwork. The district includes the cities of Alameda, Albany, Berkeley, Emeryville, Oakland, Piedmont, and San Leandro. Guidelines with rules and regulations are attached.   Deadline: Wednesday, May 3, 2016 by 5:00 PMLocation: Office of Congresswoman Barbara Lee, 1301 Clay Street, Suite 1000N, Oakland, CA 94612.  A panel of local artists and community members will serve as judges. The winning artist will receive two complimentary airline tickets so the artist and one of their family members can join Rep. Barbara Lee at the national awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. on a date to be determined in June.  In addition, our office will be having a “Fan Favorite” competition on Rep. Barbara Lee’s Facebook page (facebook.com/RepBarbaralee). Submitted artwork will be featured and open to public judging from May 3- May 10. Friends, family, classmates, and teachers will have the opportunity to “like” their favorite pieces of art. The “Facebook Fan Favorite” artwork will be displayed in Rep. Lee’s Oakland office for one year, provided it is not selected as the overall winner.
  • CALIFORNIA STUDENT VOICES CAMPAIGN –  The Student Voices Campaign is a creative way for young people to make their voices heard. Make a short video that shows your vision for your school and upload it here starting November 1, 2016.   • CALIFORNIA THROUGH MY EYES photo contest.   Invites high school students from around the state to step behind the camera lens and capture an image that represents California. First place winners receive $150 and four runners-up receive $100 each. Winners and honorable mentions will have their photos displayed at the Capitol.   • WED May 10th, 2-4 at the East Bay Depot for Creative Reuse; 4695 Telegraph Avenue .  Meet Natasha Stillman, Education Coordinator at the East Bay Depot for Creative Reuse and learn about the Depot’s resources and supports for teachers and schools. Participate in an upcycling workshop and brainstorm discussion about how to integrate concepts in your teaching.   We will be thinking together about the mix of possibilities art, maker, environmental and STEAM education realms.  Bring ideas and inspiring lessons to share.   The East Bay Depot for Creative Reuse is an ecological treasure trove of art & craft materials, educational supplies, vintage furniture, home décor, paper goods, fabric, and much more. Founded in 1979 by two Oakland public school teachers, the Depot promotes solid was

te diversion and resource conservation through the Depot store and environmental education programs. The mission of the East Bay Depot is to divert waste materials from landfills by collecting and redistributing discarded goods as low-cost supplies for art, education, and social services in our Depot Store. The educational mission is to increase the awareness of school children and the public regarding the green benefits of reuse.

  • WED MAR 8th at Skyline High, 2-4.   James Treacy / theme STEAM, presentation and workshop.
  • WED FEB 8th at the Oakland Museum.  We’ll be meeting in the cafe at 2:00 and will head into the museum at 2:30 (in case there are stragglers).  Free admission, for anyone who is with us at 2:30.  We’ll be talking about museums as an educational resource AND perhaps doing an engagement exercise or two.  If you have one up your sleeves, please bring!
  • Friday, January 27th 9:00-3:00 at International Community School, 2825 International Boulevard (parking lot in back).  “Buy Back” PD day for visual & performing arts teachers.  Most schools are planning their own Professional Learning for January 27.  However, you may get permission from your principal to attend VAPA’s PD for Visual and Performing Arts teachers on Trauma Informed Pedagogy in the morning and Responsive Classroom in the afternoon. Depending on the number of people signing up we hope to include a break out session for visual art teachers. If you are able to attend, please register via OnTrack.   • Wednesday, February 10th 2:30 – 3:40 at International Community School/Teach College Now, 2825 International Boulevard. This joint workshop with music teachers on Restorative Justice. David Yusem will come talk to us about Restorative Justice in the district: what is it, how does it work, where it is being implemented, what can we do in our own work with it. David is reputed to be a great presenter, and it’s a way to get caught up on OUSD’s cutting edge work.

  • Friday, January 29th 8:30-3:30 – La Escuelita School, 1050 Second Avenue and the Oakland Museum, 1000 Oak Street at 10th. Lunch from 11:30-12:30 on your own. The Oakland Museum has a wonderful cafe or you can bring your own lunch.

Past Events & Opportunities

 – On Saturday, April 22, the special exhibition Matisse/Diebenkorn will be opened at 9 a.m. just for teachers to explore with other teachers across disciplines, grade levels, and counties.   • Third Forum on Interdisciplinary Arts Education and Arts-Based Research. We’ll have mono printing with gel plates, henna painting, an interactive spray mural on the front of our building, watercolor demos and acrylic tables, drawing projects and much more!

  • Teaching Art Forum.  Arts-Based Research in Teaching and Learning.  Join our Alameda County Visual & Performing Arts Network. At this session, we will share ideas and strategies for practicing art-based research (ABR) with young learners (k-12). We will discuss how an ABR approach to curriculum and teaching can transform our work as creative educators and researchers.   • Agency by Design & Systems Thinking. In this day-long workshop we will explore systems, perspective taking, contemporary art, and design challenges by employing thinking routines from Project Zero’s research project, Agency by Design.   • AIG Incentive Grants – The OUSD Visual and Performing Arts Dept. is pleased to announce the 2016-17 Arts Incentive Grant Opportunity. Funds are available to build or expand arts learning opportunities at OUSD schools.   • East Bay Maker Educator Meet Ups February 25, 2016 (5:30-7:30); March 17, 2016 (5:30 – 7:30); April 28, 2016 (5:30 – 7:30)  These gatherings are for anyone interested in or already working in maker centered learning environments. We offer dinner and rotate locations in the East Bay. Join here, or contact Ilya, Brooke, or Aaron and ask us to invite you!  The three main goals are:  1) Support – To build a community for people to share stories, activities, materials, experiences, and receive ongoing support;   2) Networking – To provide networking opportunities for individuals and teachers interested in making; 3) Equity – Support all types of schools to integrate making, especially those serving low-income students.

  • Integrated Learning Specialist Program – provides K-12 teachers and teaching artists research-based frameworks and practice-proven strategies for supporting culturally-responsive arts-integrated teaching across the curriculum. Teachers participate in teacher action research and are provided with tools and knowledge to apply ongoing formative and summative performance based assessment.
  • 2016 Bay Area Billboards for Peace Project – raising voices and sharing visions of peace from children around the world.  Website provides info for participation.
